Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United footballer, has set up a 'child food poverty task force' representing the UK’s biggest food brands, with the aim that they will work together to back solutions to food poverty, he revealed in a letter sent to MPs. If you support this initiative, consider writing to your MP.

We were concerned when Lambeth Law Centre closed suddenly and unexpectedly in July 2019. That event, and conversations with its former Chair and with the remaining three Lambeth providers, have made us worried about this sector's vulnerability. The advice sector has suffered unpredictable and reduced funding for years. The collapse of the Lambeth Law Centre illustrated the vulnerability of the sector. Once gone, these valuable expressions of professional skill, volunteerism and help for disadvantaged communities cannot easily be re-established. We are in discussion with various parties about ways of making the position more secure. An Advice Services Alliance research project, commissioned by the GLA, recently published this report, Advising Londoners in July 2020. @BrixtonAdvice and @Centre70 have produced a short report on their experience of providing advice to people using foodbanks during the #coronavirus lockdown. They have seen a 79% increase in people accessing their services compared to the same time last year and experienced a 120% increase in the number of new, first-time clients accessing the advice service via the foodbank during these three months of lockdown when compared with the same period last year. We recently received advice from a tree expert we had commissioned that one of the trees on St Mary's Green had to be removed. We had commissioned this review in the light of earlier advice that it was showing signs of ill health and should be periodically checked. The latest opinion has been reported to the Lambeth Tree Officer under a Five Day Notice and since being informed of the tree's condition we have been seeking quotes for the work.
As the tree overhangs part of the public footpath surrounding the Green, we have asked the Council to erect safety barriers pending the works. We do not have any date for the works as yet. Whether this specimen will be replaced, and by what species, is a matter for further consideration at a later stage. We don't like losing trees or having to severely reduce them. We act on professional advice and give priority to the safety of people and property. UPDATE We have just received confirmation that the works will be undertaken tomorrow, 8 July, starting arount 8.45am. There will be some unavoidable noise because of the equipment used. We hope this will not be too intrusive and are sorry for any inconvenience neighbours may experience. The Walcot Foundation will consider new grant applications from charities and social enterprises for projects due to begin from September 2020 via the London Community Response portal.
This will replace our usual application process throughout the summer of 2020 and it is recommended that applications are submitted early to ensure they can be considered before funding is exhausted. This will be part of the Lambeth Community Response Fund. Grants of up to £50,000 (for a maximum 6-month project) can be applied for and The Walcot Foundation will be prioritising those applications which focus wholly or substantially on supporting Lambeth residents and fit within our updated Covid-19 priorities. Joint funding projects with other funders will be considered where work is spread across a small number of other boroughs or for larger grant requests. If you have any further questions please email grants@walcotfoundation.org.uk Gill joined the Foundation's staff in 1997 and in recent years has been our Estate Administrator. During the C-19 lock down she realised she no longer wished to make the long journey into work, which required various forms of public transport. She decided to retire. We are really sorry to lose her, and we are not certain when it will be possible to hold a proper goodbye. Gill's contribution to the Foundation has been enormous, not least because of her vast knowledge of the estate and its tenants but also because of her friendliness and fun and helpfulness as a colleague. We are going to miss her hugely.
Over the last six weeks, via the Lambeth Community Response Fund, we have awarded 30 grants totalling £437,990 to projects which are supporting low-income Lambeth residents during the current C19 crisis. We anticipate making grants totalling £580,000 by the end of June.
For projects operating from September 2020, we shall be prioritising applications which:
Because of our wish to be able to respond flexibly, we will be awarding only one-year grants for the time being. We hope to return to multi-year grants and our wider Governor Priorities from January 2021. We will review the situation in the autumn. Please visit our news pages for the latest information. School Grant Applications We are now accepting applications from schools for projects in the 2020/21 academic year. If there is something you would like us to consider, please email a very short description of the project idea (250 words max) to grants@walcotfoundation.org.uk by midday 9 June. Please note this is not required if you have already been issued recently with an application form. If it fits within the priorities above, we will then email a grant application form for you to complete by 24 June. Organisation Grant Applications We will consider grant applications that fit our priorities above from charities and social enterprises via the London Community Response website once it reopens for ‘Delivering Differently’/’Wave 3’ grants. This should reopen from week commencing 15 June 2020. We will have more information on this (including timings for decisions) when this round reopens. If you have any questions on this in the meantime, please email grants@walcotfoundation.org.uk. In this new short film, from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Connected Pictures, the experiences of seven people from around the UK are boldly illustrated in their own words. Government emergency support funding for charities is being distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund and is now open to applications. Grants will fund activities supporting people and communities affected by covid-19 and help organisations suffering acute financial difficulties because of the pandemic. There are three grants programmes:
