Wake up, people: we have a child poverty crisis

Statistics show 100,000 more children living below the breadline than a year ago

The latest official statistics show a 100,000 increase in the number of UK young people living below the breadline. The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) has found that there were 600,000 more children in relative poverty since 2010, with low-income families especially hard hit by austerity cuts such as the four-year benefit freeze and the two-child limit. Around £36bn has been taken out of the benefit system since 2010.

UK Poverty 2019/20

3/3/2020

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published its annual report on UK poverty. Key headlines -
  • In-work poverty is increasing
More than half of all people in poverty are in a working family – 56% compared to 39% 20 years ago
  • Social security is an essential public service: it should provide the anchor that we all need in tough times and should stop us getting swept into poverty
  • We all need somewhere to live – somewhere to call home – so it’s unacceptable that many of us are shut out of having a secure, affordable home
Housing costs have risen since 2000/01 for households on low incomes who rent in the private and social rented sectors, while a raft of changes to social security policy have been underway since around 2010, making housing less affordable
