Foxes

Those living on or around the Walcot Estate often encounter urban foxes. They are not always welcome neighbours.

• The evidence appears to be that there is a natural density to urban fox occupation. Steps to remove foxes may result in a temporary reduction in numbers but this soon returns to that natural density as new foxes move in.
• This document from Lambeth Council, Living with Foxes, explains the animal's annual cycle. Numbers may appear to increase in May when cubs are born, and later decline in October as fox families start to break up and spread out to new territories.
• Various products are available that are claimed to deter the urban fox. Views on whether these work vary greatly. We recommend only humane means of control (see links).
